Vilayphone holds a Bachelor of Engineering from the National University of Laos and a Master of Environmental Engineer and Management from the National University Via Asia_Link Program.

Vilayphone previously worked for the Electricite du Laos, supporting the development and implementation of environmental Programmes. She has almost 14 years experience working with government and private sector. At ESL, Vilayphone holds the position of Environmental Engineer with Earth Systems Lao.  She has strong technical abilities and specialised expertise and experience in development study and water quality monitoring.  She also has professional experience in socio-economic and gender-related studies.

Representative Experience

Ms. Vilayphone Vongpith has recently worked on the following projects:

  • Project Manager and Lead TA: Environmental Management Unit Technical Assistance Program, (2005-ongoing)
  • Team Leader, Conducted the study on Assessment of Sanitation and potable water and water storage in Nam Mee watershed area. Sang Thong District, Vientiane municipality, Master course of Environmental Engineer and Management. The study included:  collecting and analysing data, and writing report (2008)
  • Team leader, Socio-economic Household Survey, NT2 – EIA Nam Phit detention pond.  NT2 proposed to constructed detention pond at the swampland in lower Nam Phit to minimize the fluctuation of the water level, will be released from NT2 to Xebang Fai River. My task included: conducted household survey, data analysis and wrote a household report (April 2006)
  • Team leader, Socio-economic and Household Survey for the Xe Bang Fai Downstream Restoration Programme, Nam Theun 2 Hydroelectric Project. Responsible for the coordination of a Rapid Rural Appraisal in 20 downstream pilot villages. The Appraisal involved household surveys, SWOT, problem tree analysis and village mapping. (October 2005 to Feb 2006)
  • Team leader, Annual Household Survey, Sepon Mining Project, Savannakhet Province. Survey Coordinator, socio-economic field researcher and data analysis. (December 2005 to February 2006)
  • Team Leader, Field Survey for the UNIDO Mercury Project. Responsible for UNIDO representative in the field with data collection, community consultation and raising awareness of health issues associated with mercury exposure. (March 2006)  
  • Team Leader, Phu Kham Copper Mining Project, Xaysomboun Special Zone. Conducted field research, data collation and report preparation for the household socio-economic and health nutrition studies. (January to October 2005)
  • Team leader and socio-economic researcher, Nam Theun 2 Hydropower Project, Rapid Socio-economic Appraisal. Responsible for data collation and quality assurance. (August  to December 2004)
  • Office Assistant, Oxiana Gold Mining Company, Melbourne Australia. Engaged to translate the Oxaina website from English to Lao. The website aims to provide comprehensive information about the Gold Mining Project in Savannakhet, Lao PDR. (January to March 2004)
  • Marketing Officer, Earth Systems (Australia) Pty Ltd, Worked closely with the Information Manager to design and distribute marketing and promotional information on environmental consulting services. (March 2003 to June 2004)
  • Environmental Research Assistant, Environmental and Social Issues Management for the Sepon Gold Mining Project, International Finance Corporation. Assisted with the preparation of training materials for government and mine staff to enhance environmental and social management. (January 2001 to 2003)
  • Environmental Engineer, Environmental & Social Impact Assessment of the Sepon Gold and Copper Mine, Savannakhet Province, Lane Xang Minerals Limited (January 2001 to 2003).  Specific responsibilities included:
    • Preparation of the Lao language Executive Summary for the ESIA.
    • Preparation of materials for the community consultation and public participation program.
    • Conduct of socio-economic and gender base-line investigations involving household surveys, facilitate the gender focus groups study and report preparation.
    • Coordination of various environmental and social investigations involving liaison with environmental experts, attendance at project meetings, and provision of administrative and technical assistance when required.
  • Electrical Engineer, Electrical Distribution and Standards Project, Electricite du Laos. Duties included:  research for, and preparation of, an Electrical Standards Manual (July 1999 to December 2000)
  • Electrical Engineer, Renewable Energy Project, Electricite du Laos, Vientiane Province.  Duties included viability analysis for individual villages and project implementation and monitoring, where appropriate.  Viability analysis involved data collection via socio-economic based household surveys and analysis of that data (July 1997 to June 1999)
